Training course in critical patient applied pharmacology

This course is designed to improve the quality of care provided to critical patients and to increase their safety levels from the point of view of applied pharmacology. Pharmacology concepts, their application to the patient and haemodynamic and neurological failures are studied. This training is intended for physicians of different specialties, from casualty to family and community medicine.
Total teaching hours 23.00 (16.00 horas presenciales + 7.00 horas elearning)
Training aims

General objectives

  • To acquire the knowledge and skills needed to tackle the main syndromes in critical medicine from the point of view of applied pharmacology, applying the most appropriate pedagogical principles based on type of student, training characteristics and the best scientific evidence available at the time of giving the training event.

Specific objectives

  • To acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for critical patient care provision based on the principles of applied pharmacology.
  • To understand the necessary medicinal ingredients for application in the main critical medicine syndromes (acute haemodynamic failure, arrhythmias in critically ill patients, acute neurological failure, cardiac arrest).
  • To have the necessary knowledge to prevent or minimise interactions derived from the use of different medicinal ingredients in critical patient management.
  • To understand the major side effects from medicines, either individually or when employed in therapeutic combinations.
  • To improve critical patient safety by increasing knowledge of the different medicinal ingredients used.
  • To understand and apply the basic principles defined by applied pharmacology.
  • To study the special characteristics of the application of pharmacological principles in critical patients.
  • To study and apply the main inotropic and vasoactive agents to critical patients (derived from endogenous amine phosphodiesterase inhibitors; other therapeutic groups; agents used in hypertensive emergencies).
  • To apply the pharmacological resources derived from volumetric support to critical patients (crystalloids, colloids, other drug groups).
  • To study and apply the resources that pharmacology offers for arrhythmia control in critical patients.
  • To understand and apply the necessary pharmacological elements for application in the different aspects of acute neurological failure.
  • To study the basic pharmacological principles applied to PCR (use of derivatives of endogenous amines, use of anticholinergics, knowledge of the principles for the management of arrhythmias in PCR, conduct adjuvant treatments (thrombolytics)
  • To define and apply generic patient safety concepts and apply them specifically to critical patient pharmacology.
