Ophthalmic emergency care training

This course trains the ophthalmology professional in accident and emergency. The students study the anatomy of the eyeball and ocular adnexa, possible ocular pathologies, defensive elements of the eyeball and appendages and eye trauma. It is intended for practitioners working in accident and emergency and ophthalmology departments.

Training aims

General objectives

  • To acquire, develop and strengthen the necessary skills in dealing with ophthalmic accident and emergencies.

Specific objectives

  • To acquire the knowledge and skills to manage the slit lamp and the direct ophthalmoscope (for eye fundus visualisation and pupil glare assessment).
  • To acquire schematic anatomical knowledge of the eyeball and ocular adnexa. -To learn the role of the defensive elements of the eyeball and its appendages (tear function, watery mucous and lymphoid centres).
  • To understand the central visual function (visual acuity) and the photo-motor reflex and its pathologies.
  • To understand the inflammatory, infectious and degenerative pathologies of the ocular adnexa.
  • To acquire knowledge on the inflammatory and infectious corneal and scleral pathologies.
  • To acquire knowledge on the uvea inflammatory pathology (especially the anterior uvea).
  • To acquire knowledge on pathologies which present a sharp decrease in central vision (visual acuity) and peripheral vision (visual field).
  • To assimilate knowledge on pathologies which present dysfunction of central vision (metamorphopsia), peripheral vision (myodesopsia and/or photopsia) or binocular integration (diplopia).
  • To acquire knowledge on the pathology resulting from the sudden rise in intraocular pressure.
  • To understand the trauma aspects of eyeball and ocular adnexa.
