Training in child trauma care

In this course students study aspects of paediatric trauma and attend workshops where they learn how to handle issues such as the airway, ventilation, circulation, radiology, mobilisation and immobilisation. A comprehensive care simulation for children with multiple trauma is also implemented.

Training aims

General objectives

  • To acquire the knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive care to children with severe trauma.

Specific objectives

  • To understand the systematics of child trauma care.
  • To train airway opening, isolation and stability techniques.
  • To train cricothyroid puncture.
  • To train pleural puncture/drainage.
  • To train peripheral, central and intraosseous IV routes.
  • To train in the various techniques of trauma patient mobilisation and immobilisation.
