Evidence and quality-based care

MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) modality course for the training of students in reviewing concepts related to uncertainty management in clinical practice and Evidence-Based Care (EBC), quality and patient safety. These three areas have closely related elements as they incorporate the vision and action guidelines advocated by EBC and impact directly on the quality and safety of the care provided to patients.

Training aims

General objectives

  • To train future specialists in Health Sciences to improve their clinical decisions, manage their uncertainty when choosing alternative actions regarding patients and provide the citizen with the best healthcare based on available scientific evidence; to help them to incorporate correct clinical reasoning in situations of uncertainty in clinical care and include patient preferences when possible.
  • To train future specialists in Health Sciences in the key paradigms, dimension and basic methodological elements of quality management and patient safety.

Specific objectives

  • To identify knowledge gaps that restrict clinical practice.
  • To pose clinically relevant questions.
  • To conduct effective, efficient and feasible information searches.
  • To critically evaluate the scientific literature found.
  • To apply scientific evidence to personalised patient care.
  • To set clinical decision-making in the context of the specific competencies of the professional’s specialty and level(s) of responsibility.
  • To acquire a knowledge of the protection against the inherent uncertainty of decision-making in healthcare.
  • To understand the importance, planning, measurement and improvement of quality.
  • To identify the key concepts related to quality management in health service organisations.
  • To measure the relevance and strategies of techniques and approaches which have proved effective in patient safety.
