Handling difficult situations

This training prepares the students to deal with potentially difficult situations by applying the necessary strategies to handle difficult patients in hospital accident and emergency services.

Training aims

General objectives

  • To acquire and train the necessary strategies to handle difficult patients in hospital accident and emergency departments in order to provide a better service.

Specific objectives

  • To understand the neurophysiological stress response that can lead to a defensive or aggressive reaction and how to handle it.
  • To manage one’s own emotions when facing critical situations as a prior step to managing those of others.
  • To identify the basic needs that lie behind a “problematic” personality in order to facilitate resolution and therefore not only overcome resistance, but also obtain collaboration.
  • To manage emotions and to use them correctly and in time.
  • To master communication techniques that facilitate the patients’ understanding and help to provide better care for their needs.
  • To use different influence techniques to bring about a change in the situation when dealing with conflict.
  • To increase resistance to personal frustration.
  • To transform problems into opportunities for improvement.
  • To apply specific methodology in order to provide comprehensive and excellent patient care.
