Comprehensive care for patients with pain in clinical practice

MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) modality course which trains the student to understand the existing strategic framework in pain care in the Andalusian Public Health System (APHS) in order to improve the care and quality of life of patients who suffer pain. The professional arrives at an understanding of pain in a multimodal, comprehensive manner and differentiates their approach according to acute pain (emergency, perioperative or preventable - associated with diagnostic or therapeutic actions) or chronic pain.

Training aims

General objectives

  • To improve the clinical practice of APHS professionals in patient pain care, contributing to the relief of suffering regardless of origin and in every area of the learning system.

Specific objectives

  • To understand the strategic framework for pain care in the APHS (Andalusian Plan for Care for People with Pain and related Integrated Healthcare Processes).
  • To understand the physiology of pain. Pathophysiological types of pain (nociceptive, neuropathic and mixed and their importance in the therapeutic approach).
  • To understand pain in a comprehensive way, differentiating the approach depending on whether it is chronic pain or acute pain (emergency, perioperative or preventable
  • associated with diagnostic or therapeutic actions).
  • To understand the necessary communication skills in order to conduct a clinical interview regarding pain in clinical practice.
  • To understand and the apply tools for the assessment of the severity, impact and type of pain.
  • To study the pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapeutic measures based on the best available evidence.
  • To recognise the importance of pain prevention associated with diagnostic and therapeutic actions.
